Drug Courts... Continuing to provide individuals with the necessary tools to reestablish a healthy, drug free lifestyle

Since the inception of the drug court model in 1989, there has been
a move by many judges away from the traditional way courts have
dealt with drug and alcohol abusing defendants. Drug courts help defendants break free from the drug addiction which trapped them in the revolving door of the criminal justice system.

Drug courts seek to change the behavior of offenders by requiring frequent appearances before the judge, comprehensive supervision, frequent drug testing, treatment services, and immediate sanctions and incentives.

Drug court programs bring the full weight of all intervenors (judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, substance abuse treatment specialists,
probation officers, law enforcement and correctional personnel, educational and vocational experts, community leaders and others) to bear, forcing the offender to deal with his or her substance abuse problem.
